Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is one of the most renowned Olympic athletes of all time. He was born on June 30, 1985 in Maryland. Phelps has broken several records in his swimming career and at this time he is the most celebrated Olympian. He has won more number of gold medals than anyone else. His tally of 18 gold medals indeed doubles the number of gold medals won by the second highest record holder. He won 8 gold medals in 2008 in the Beijing Games making him the first person ever to finish at the first spot at any single appearance in an Olympic game. Five of eight medals Phelps won came from the individual swimming events. In the 2012 Olympics, he was able to bag 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals. With this he became the most successful athlete at the Olympics for three times in a row.

Phelps is also the world record holder for the long course in the following events: 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley. In his entire career he has won total 77 medals in the major international events. This total includes 61 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 3 bronze medals in events including Olympics, Pan Pacific Championship, and World Championship.  

Because of his record shattering performances he has won several awards including World Swimmer of the Year Award for seven times. He has also won American Swimmer of the Year Award as many as nine times. He has also founded an organization named as Michael Phelps Foundation whose aim is to encourage swimming as a sport.
